Thomas listed as a bookkeeper residing at 5 Middle Patrick place.

I believe this Thomas had a brother named William who moved to New York. I have a letter written from William to Tom and William mentions his son Charlie. So I have come to think that he is the William listed in this census: "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZ6L-PLF : 12 August 2016), William Gilbert, New York, New York, New York, United States; citing enumeration district ED 436, sheet 505D, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.), roll 0888; FHL microfilm 1,254,888.
