  • Great pictures. Would anyone have information on the Tierney and Costello families from Tipperary. Specifically, seeking information on a Elizabeth Tierney (from Cloughjordan/Gortavalla) who married a John Mooney (Widower) in Nenagh in 1855. Their parents were Danl Mooney (Tailor) and John Tierney (Farmer). Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  • Hello Brendan, I was here to upload my family ancestors, which include Tierney, Costello and O'Meara families from Tipperary and Offaly(King's) region. These families are very intertwined and have been quite perplexing to myself and other distant cousins who have been working to track the lineage. My Tierneys, Costellos and O'Mearas all migrated to Canada, around the 1820's and 1830's. So while the ones you mention are not the same as my lineage, it is possible that they are siblings or counsins.
My Elizabeth Tierney was born about 1806 in Tipperary. She was most likely the youngest child born to (unknown) Tierney and Bridget (unknown). In 1821, Eliza was recorded living with her widowed mother in the home of her sister Mary Fennely (nee Tierney) (c. 1801, Tipperary) and Mary's husband Denis Fennely, in Birr, King's (Offaly). Shortly thereafter Eliza married Thomas Henry O'Meara (c. 1796, Tipperary) and then migrated to Ontario, Canada.
At roughly the same time another Thomas O'Meara married one Ellen Tierney, also from Tipperary, and also moved to Ontario, Canada. They have no known relation to my Tierney's or O'Mearas, but more than likely were distant cousins at the least. Both sets of Tierney-O'Mearas had roughly the same number of children and mostly named them all the same names, the only difference being the birth order. This has caused a great deal of frustration in trying to document them in Canada, and then later America. It is certainly possible that your Elizabeth Tierney has a relation to either of these women or their siblings.
As for Costellos: My Costello line I have traced begins, with certainty with Matthew Costello (c.1789, Tipperary) a farmer who was born to a farming father, most likely named John Costello. Matthew married Ann O'Meara around 1813 in Tipperary. Ann O'Meara was born around 1794 in Tiperrary to
Thomas O'Meara (c.1770, Tipperary) and Mary Grady (c.1774, Tipperary). Ann, I believe, is the aunt of Thomas Henry O'Meara, Meaning that when Thomas' daughter Mary Ellen married Matthew Costello Jr. in Canada in 1851, they married as second cousins, once removed.
Matthew Costello and Ann O'Meara had 11 children. In Ireland were born: James (c. 1812, Puchane, Tipperary), John (c.1814, Tipperary), Winifred Sevena (c. 1816, Tipperary), Thomas (c.1821, Tipperary). The family Migrated to Ontario Canada around 1822. There were born: Matthew Jr. (b. 12 Oct 1823, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Mary (c.1824, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Annie (c.1826, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Eleanor (b.9 May 1827, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), Michael (b. 16 Dec 1829, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada), and Catherine (b. 12 Oct 1832, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).
In the 1850's the family moved to Clinton county, Iowa, Ubited States, where Matthew died in 1865.
Sorry I don't have any specific help for you, just general family names from the same area and timeframe.
Have you checked the parish records? Here is the link for Cloughjordan: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0775
Good luck in your continued search!

  • Hello Kathleen B, I have information on Matthew and Ann O'Meara Costello and his son Matthew and Ellen O'Meara. • Hi Kathleen and Robin! My apologies for the delayed response. I just saw your response. It definitely sounds like there could be a connection, now the task of seeing if there if and where it is :)

Bit more about Elizabeth Tierney. I have not yet found Elizabeth's birth record. Triangulating from several other records, appears she was born circa 1840 to John Tierney and Mary Costello (per her Elizabeth's death certificate in 1911). Believe most of her sibs were born in and around Loughane, Co. Tipperary and it appears she moved to Gortavalla (may have been spelt Gorravalla) at some point and later Nenagh and Roscrea. There are some Costellos in Gortavalla through the 1901/1911 census (James Costelloe and Winnifred Dunne).

My gg-grandmother Elizabeth married  John Mooney in Nenagh (or at least that is where it was registered) in 1855. John was listed as a Widower (RIC) and a Pensioner (may have been significantly older) and his residence was Cloughjordan, her residence was Gortavalla. Witnesses were Thomas Williams (also Cloughjordan) and Debby Costello (no records). Their parents were Danl Mooney (Tailor) and John Tierney (Farmer). Assuming John was not RC as it was registered pre-1864.

Given Elizabeth's later move after John Mooney's death, a big portion of her family moving to Canada or elsewhere would not be suprising. Elizabeth had several children and then remarried to a William Robinson and lived in England/Liverppool and Drogheda, Louth prior to emigrating to the USA in mid 1880s and settling in Boston. Her daughter Letitia Robinson was born somewhere in England (likely Liverpool). She married a John P. Collins in Boston in mid-1890s. That woudl be my g-grandmother.

More to come but wanted to reach out.

  • Thomas Costello married Bridget Grace in Kilruane church on June 8th, 1898. Thomas was working as a porter at Cloughjordan railway station.

He has no known connection to Cloughjordan before he came to work there. His father was James Costello, and his mother was Bessy Curley. They married in 1865 in Ballymore. Both were servants. He was born in Ballymore, Co Westmeath on Nov 13th, 1866. His two brothers James (1868) and John (1870) were also born in Westmeath. The family moved to Banagher, and his sister Ann was born there in 1872. Another brother Michael died in 1878 aged three years.

In 1901 all three brothers worked on the railway. Thomas at Cloughjordan, James at Banagher and John at Ballybrophy.

Bridget Grace was the daughter of John Grace and Mary Tuohy. John was a blacksmith as was his father, Patrick Grace. Mary was the daughter of David Tuohy, a labourer at the local distillery.

Thomas Costello and Bridget Grace had 8 children between 1899 and 1911, Elizabeth, Mary, James, John, Thomas, Bridget, Francis, and Elizabeth.

In 1903 the children’s grandfather James Costello came to live in Cloughjordan. He lived in a house in Main Street and died in 1910. He is buried at Grawn church.
