Thomas worked as Headmaster at the Academical College, Coleraine for 45 years from 1870. After his retirement he served as a member of the Senate in the Stormont Parliament for Queen's University, Belfast. 

By 1911 Thomas was a widower and lived with his daughter Margaret Millar Houston. He also retained a number of servants named Margaret Warnock, Margaret Walke and Annie Lennon as well as a Cook named Rose McKay. Thomas was born at Mountpottinger, Belfast, and was educated at Cookstown Academy, Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Queen's College, Belfast. He died aged 96.
