Thomas Joseph Daly, May 1848 - 11 November 1910.

My great grandfather, Thomas Joseph Daly was born in Tulla, County Clare on May 1848 and was baptised on 1 June of that year. He was the son of Carroll and Bridget (nee Quinlivin): His siblings were John, James and Bridget. (There may well have been more who
remain unrecorded.) Carroll was a shopkeeper and cooper in Tulla in what is now Michael Corbett’s clothing store.

I understand that most of Carroll’s sons emigrated to the US, with John remaining in Tulla to assume the family business. Thomas emigrated separately to the colony of Victoria, Australia, possibly around 1870, where he was engaged in the Penitentiary Service. He
served in gaols in Melbourne, Sale in eastern Victoria, and went on to become the Governor of Castlemaine and Ballarat Gaols.

Thomas married Honora Quinlivin, fourth daughter of James Laurence Quinlivin of Garruragh, Tulla on 4 May 1874 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Ballarat, Victoria. Honora may well have been his cousin from Tulla, and she had arrived in Australia at the age of 16 with her brother James.

Thomas and Honora named their son (my grandfather) Thomas Joseph. He was born in Melbourne on 12 July 1884 (NB: He always celebrated his birthday on 13 July due to the unfortunate concurrence of his birthday and Orangeman’s Day.) He had one sister, Helena,
who entered the Convent of Notre Dame de Sion. Thomas was educated in Castlemaine, Victoria and went on to join the State Savings Bank of Victoria, eventually rising to managerial level.

My grandfather served in the Australian Light Horse during WW1, completing his service as a Lieutenant Colonel and regimental commander before returning to the bank. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and was Mentioned in Despatches twice. In 1911,
He married Eileen Mongovan at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Ballarat. Eileen, was the granddaughter of Daniel Brophy from Castlecomer, Co Kilkenny. Daniel was an entrepreneur, Mayor of Ballarat, Member of Parliament and an outspoken Irish Nationalist.

Thomas and Eileen Daly had two children: Thomas Joseph, my uncle, who went on to become Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Daly KBE, CB, DSO and Margaret Eileen (Daly) Willis, my mother. I also served in the Australian Army retiring as a major general. I have
four siblings and we all inherited the republican gene.
