Thomas was naturalized in 1863 and gives his place of birth as Queen's. Baptism records for his children in NY name women Mary and Ann Maher who may be sisters, but have yet to be identified in US records. There is no known record naming his parents or specific place of birth.
Y-DNA tests links him to a Maher family who lived around Kilmorony in County Laois. This family's earliest ancestor is Patrick Maher born about 1810 and had at least one son Patrick (1840-1908) whose family remained in the area. The tests place descendants of Patrick and Thomas as close relations in the Meagher/Maher FamilyTreeDNA surname test group, but their connection may be several generations back.
