Thomas White was a publican and grocer who was born about 1801 in Tulla.  He was married to Catherine Quinlivan and they raised a large family in Tulla.  Thomas ran White’s pub which was located at the top of the village just beyond the Tulla graveyard.  The building is still in use today and descendants still reside there.  Thomas died on 22 June 1897 aged 96.  His wife Catherine had predeceased him.  He is buried in Tulla graveyard alongside his wife and other family members.

  • I would like to learn more about Thomas, particularly who his parents were or if he had any siblings. I have Stephen White circa 1760's, Sixmilebridge area. His daughter Mary White abt 1780 same area married John Daniel Kenny. Mary and John's children all baptised in Cratloe.

  • Dear Dawn:

Thanks.  I'm not sure who Thomas White's parents were.  There is a local person who is descended from this family and I will try to find out more information.

I do see several White families listed in the Sixmilebridge parish registers which are available online through the Clare Library website.  Here is the link:

I would recommend that you take a look at the graveyard transcriptions on the above link as they may be of assistance to you.  I will let you know if I can find anything further.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Jane, thank you for that info. I have been looking at that site and though I knew Mary was buried in the Ballysheen cemetery I hadn't seen the other sites, so thank you. If you find out anything from the local person please let me know.

    Cheers

P.S I have Margaret Ryan circa 1800 (ggxgrandmother) also. Shipping records say from Limerick, married Michael Meaney 1830's, first born daughter Bridget circa1832. Whole family came to South Australia.

  • Hi Anna: My apologies as I'm only seeing your comment today! It is possible that your Carrowroe townland White family may have been related to the White family of Tulla. I would recommend that you take a look at the Clare Library website and look at the parish registers for Tulla and Quin/Clooney. You should be able to piece together the family from those registers. Any problems, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. Happy New Year! All the best, Jane
