Tobias (Toby) TOOLE (O'TOOLE) : Short Biography

Tobias TOOLE/O'TOOLE was born in Loggan Upper, County Wexford, IREALND, on 8 February 1832, the son of Thomas TOOLE (b 7 Aug 1796 Loggan d 9 Oct 1865 NSW) and Hannah FLYNN (b 1800 Tomacork d 21 Sep 1878 NSW). The family lived on Block 5 Loggan Upper before the clearances in the late 1840's. They moved to Whaley Abbey, County Wicklow, before sailing to the colony of New South Wales. 

Tobias, sponsored by his sister, Margaret, arrived in Sydney on 17 Feb 1855 per the ship SAMUEL BODDINGTON. Working as a labourer at Saunders Quarry in Pyrmont, Tobias saved 40 pounds, in order to sponsor his parents and siblings to New South Wales. The family arrived on 31 Jan 1857 and the following day Tobias married Eliza O'NEIL at St Augustine's, Balmain. 

In 1873 Tobias became licensee of the SPREAD EAGLE HOTEL on the corner of Harris and Harvey Streets in Pyrmont, and quickly changed the name to the GREENTREE HOTEL. He also bought the leasehold on properties in Little John Street and Cross Street.

Tobias TOOLE died at the GREENTREE HOTEL on 2 October 1879 aged 47, and was buried at Petersham Cemetery.  With the closure of Petersham Cemetery his remains were removed on 1 Feb 1927 to the family plot at Rookwood (Mortuary 2; Section 3; Grave 118).
