Bill served with the British Royal Flying Corps in World War I. He took the training but did not see action. His military records do not seem to exist; they may have been destroyed during World War II in the London Blitz.
Bill became an American citizen on January 1, 1929. See his Declaration of Intention (1927) and United States of America Petition for Naturalization (1929).
