Stayed in Ireland

William Brearton (Brierton, Brereton) lived in or near Thurles Tipperary.  He was an architect who primarily worked on ancient castles.

He married Mary Ryan of Glenbrida (sp) on March 6, 1821.  His wedding record states he is from Knockomoora (sp?) and wedding witnesses were James Ryan and William Brearton, Sr. Mary was Catholic, William was Church of Ireland.

His father was a minister in Church of Ireland.

William died around 1837, leaving Mary a widow with 4 children.

In about 1837 Mary emigrated to Canada with 4 children: Johanna (1823-1898) (married name: Touhey), Patrick (1826-1879), Michael (1827-1855), and Mary (1829-1912) (married name: Williams). In Canada they lived in Puslinch or Guelph. All 4 children eventually moved to USA.

  • Do you have a copy of the wedding record? I'm following the Mary Williams line but the one, seemingly unreliable, source says that William and Mary were married around 1825 and that Mary Ryan was raised in the outskirts of Thurles.

My info agrees about William dying around 1837 in Thurles.
