William Cormack 1828

Back to List

William Cormack was my great grandfather. His parents were Nicholas Cormack and Bridget Ryan

He travelled to Sydney Australia in 1855 aboard the ship Bermondsey with his brother Patrick. He was 26 and Patrick 25. They had an aunt Ellen Ryan living at Windsor in Sydney. On the passenger list they give their Native place as Holycross, Tipperary. They state that their parents, Nicholas Cormack and Bridget Ryan are alive and living in Thurles, Tipperary.

There does not seem to be any record of the christening of William or Patrick in the Holycross baptismal records but there is a record for Mary Cormack, baptised on 28 Mar 1836 to Parents Nicholas Cormack and Bridget Ryan. Sponsors were Nicholas Cormack and Judith Purcel. So it seems the brothers had at least one sibling who may have stayed in Ireland.

After some time in Sydney, William came to Melbourne and on 8 Feb 1869 married my great grandmother Mary Chadwick, a native of Tipperary, Tipperary. The witnesses at their wedding were Timothy Ryan and Mary Ellen Lyons. They could all sign their names.

They had 6 children, including my grandfather William born in 1876 and settled in the Footscray area of Melbourne. My mother was born in Footscray in 1916.
