Place of migration
Migrated to/Born in USA

BIRTH YEAR AND PARENTS
William Gleeson was baptized on February 18, 1820 in County Tipperary according to the Mullinahone Record Books. His parents were Thomas Gleeson and Mary Cushion. The record book only listed the diocese and county. They were the Diocese Cashel and Emly in County Tipperary. It was calculated that, because of his place of marriage -- the Town of Drangan -- that town may have been his birthplace. If so, then William Gleeson was born in Drangan Civil Parish in Cloneen and Killustry Catholic Parish. (The Catholic Parish reduced its name in 1826 to Cloneen.)
MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
In 1844 he married Ellen Mara in the Town of Drangan (Catholic Parish Cloneen, Civil Parish Drangan, County Tipperary). They had five children during their marriage. William neither owner nor leased a house or land. He leased a house in the Drangan area. He was a Laborer. An oral narrative, by a descendant, was documented that William Gleeson immigrated to the USA, probably after his wife's death in 1876, and he may have remarried. The second wife's name may have been Ellen O'Meara. His daughter, Mary, married William Quinn, and her obituary reported that she died in New Haven County, Connecticut in 1951. No parents, spouse, or children were named in her obituary. Another daughter, Margaret, married William St John, and outlived him, probably dying in the county of her birth -- County Tipperary, Ireland.
DEATH
William Gleeson did NOT die on October 10, 1904 because the records for Thomas Gleson did not apply to William Gleeson. A William Gleeson died in New Haven, Connecticut in 1907. Another William Gleason died in New Haven, Connecticut in 1915. Perhaps this William Gleeson died there on one of those dates, in that location, and perhaps not. A documented oral narrative before 2009 from a descendant reported that William Gleeson died in Connecticut. As of 2021, no documentation of William Gleeson' death in either Ireland or the United States had been found.
BURIAL
This William Gleeson was NOT buried in New London, Connecticut, in Old St Michael's Cemetery in the gravesite of Thomas Gleson. There are several gravesites in Connecticut that have inscriptions of William Gleeson's name and variants.

NOTED
As of 2021, the location of the gravesite for William Gleeson had not been determined although it was calculated to be somewhere in Connecticut. William Gleeson had relatives in Connecticut.
NOTED
As of 2021, no written record of the following had been found: Margaret Flaherty (1913-2009), orally reported that she heard from a child of a grandson that William's middle name was Thomas and that, after William immigrated to the USA, he married a woman with the maiden name O'Meara.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 18th Feb 1820 (circa)
Date of Death 1st Jan 1877 (circa)

Comments

  • It is more likely that the first wife of William came from Drangan as the bride's family home determined which church was used for marriage.
