  • I am always looking for Dillon ancestors.  Would you know if you have any connection to Patrick Dillon (born 1857ish Listowel) of a horse racing/training family?

  • Kate, do you have any Dillon - Sheehy or Coffey / Coffee marriages in your researches from Listowel (Duagh parish in particular)

  • Meika, thanks for your reply, to be honest, I don't know.  Patrick (1857) was my great-grandfather and his father was John, a "Carman".  I know this because he is named on Patrick's marriage certificate.  Patrick married for the first time, in London in 1883 (which puzzles me somewhat,) and that is as much as I know apart from his being born in Listowel.  On their return from London, they relocated to Tralee.  With the help of Kerry archives, we have deduced that Patrick was born in 1857 and that his mother was Margaret MacMahon, that is literally all I know except that John and Margaret had three other children, Margaret, Bridget, and Ellen; there I draw a blank.  I long to know whether great-great-grandfather John had brothers or sisters that connect with the other Dillons of Listowel as I can see there were many Dillon's in the area.  Patrick and his two wives had seven children that survived and one wrote his memoirs; (he was a well-known jockey who married the music hall star Marie Lloyd.)  He stated that he had so many cousins that when he was young he felt that he was related to everyone in the area.  I do know that they were very involved with horseracing and have gleaned some information from the Irish newspaper archives which show Patrick racing at Listowel and other places in the southwest of Ireland.

I suppose, to summarise, I need to know who John's family was but as in all good mysteries - there is little evidence!!  I am hoping that sometime, there will be a spark and everything will fall into place.

    thanks again,

  • I have a DNA connection but no papertrail connection with a Sheehy researcher in the USA. He has lots of Dillons in his tree. Trying to link it up. He is on here occasionally.

I've posted a bit about my Kerry horsemanship to Monaro, NSW, connections on this forum here  (knowing now they came from Scrahan townland in Duagh parish).

    Thank you for your response.
