Migrated to/Born in USA

William HUGHES, son of John HUGHES  /HUGHS and Catherine COYNE was born in Ireland on December 14, 1825, and emigrated to the USA at the age of 15.

Mr. Hughes married a woman named Catherine "Kate"_______ about 1855-1865, probably in Wisconsin.  They had at least seven children:

Mary and Alice born in Wisconsin and Nellie, Lizzie, James, Catherine, and Andrew [all born in Iowa]

Hughes served in the U.S. Civil War in Co. "K," 7th Wisconsin, Infantry.

He moved to Iowa, USA by 1870.  He settled in New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa in 1886.

Just prior to his death in 1932, he was believed to be the oldest Iowan and the oldest Civil War Veteran still living.

Asked by a newspaper reporter the secret to his long life he replied: "I've been good to myself by going to bed early, getting up early, eating right, and living right."

He died at Ft. Dodge, Webster County, Iowa on August 29, 1932, at the age of 107, and was buried at Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Chickasaw County, Iowa, USA.
