William P. Cassidy was born on March 15, 1837 in Roscommon County, Ireland. He emigrated to the USA with his parents in his teen years.  William took up railroading at the age of 17. In 1856  he served as a fireman on the Williamsport and Elmira Railroad. He was a pioneer of Iowa City and after 53 years as an Engineer on the Railroad he was the "oldest trainman in Iowa." He was known as "Dad" on the railroad.

William married Miss Jane Elizabeth Morris in Iowa City, Iowa, USA on October 22, 1865.  The family moved to Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa in 1868.  The couple had eight children.

Mr. Cassidy died on February 7, 1921 and was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa.
