William "Thomas" O'Driscoll1818

William "Thomas" O'Driscoll 1818

Back to List

Assistance required for this ancestor who disappeared from records after his wedding despite my research efforts.

I have added "Thomas" which is the christian name used in the wedding notice in Australian newspaper for his daughter Sarah Hockey nee Driscoll.  Himself and his wife Sarah were deceased at time of this wedding in 1879.

Background

William O'Driscoll was probably born in or around Newport Tipperary.  Given I have no birth details its possible that his family travelled up to Newport from the south of Ireland.

There is no details of his mother.  His DOB is estimated from his wedding papers.

As per his wedding papers his father was William O'Driscoll dob n/k whose occupation was recorded as a "stucco man" residing in Newport.

His wife was Sarah Palmer (1822? - 1877?). Her father was a Robert Palmer who recorded occupation was also a "stucco man" living in Newport.

At the time of his wedding O'Driscoll was a private in the 59th Foot (2nd Notthinghamshire) Regiment.  As he was married at Nenagh in 1848 he was probably stationed at the nearby McCann Barracks.

Both witnesses to the wedding William MacMahon (service no. 1116) and John Tedford (service no. 1825) were recorded as been with the 59th Foot at the time of the wedding.

William and Sarah had at least 2 children Robert Henry Driscoll (1852 - 1924) born Limerick and Sarah Driscoll (1858-1944).  Both emigrated to Victoria Australia.  Daughter Sarah's birth details are u/k - there has been talk of been born in London but nothing confirmed.

Its possible that William is recorded without the "O" in his surname.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Thanks Rob Chisholm
