William Tierney was my paternal great-grandfather. He was born in County Tipperary in about 1858 (his children’s birth certificates all give his birthplace as “Tipperary”, so we don’t know if that means Tipperary town or County Tipperary). William’s father was William Tierney, a Farmer; his mother’s name is unknown.
Some DNA evidencehints that William hailed from the locality of Stuick, in the north of County Tipperary. He was living in Dublin at the time of his marriage in 1884, and his occupation was as a Grocer.
William married Elizabeth Carty on 25th February 1884 in the Catholic Chapel of the Assumption in Dalkey. Very soon after his marriage, on 27th March 1884, William emigrated to Australia alone, on the Gulf of Venice. He arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 24th May 1884. Elizabeth joined him there in December 1885. William and Elizabeth lived in Melbourne, primarily St Kilda and Elwood, for the rest of their lives.
William and Elizabeth Tierney had four children: William Patrick Tierney (1888-1960), Kathleen Mary (“May”) (1889-1970), Elizabeth Frances (1892-1970; she is my grandmother), and Josephine (1893-1934).
William was a driver (or “Gripman”) on Melbourne’s cable car system for several years. By 1912, perhaps earlier and/or progressively over a few years, William and Elizabeth had started a dairy at the family home in Brighton Rd, Elwood in Melbourne.
At some time between 1915 and 1916, William and Elizabeth split up and lived separately, William with his son William Patrick. William Tierney died in 1935, aged about 77.
