Note: at the time of the Poor Law Unions, Co. Laois was known as Queen's County.
The Abbeyleix Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £6,870. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Abbeyleix Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Aghaboe, Abbeyleix, Aghmacart, Ballinakill, Ballyroan, Castletown, Coolkerry, Killermogh, Raheen and Timahoe in Co. Laois, and Durrow in Co. Kilkenny.
The site of the Abbeyleix Workhouse is now occupied by the District Hospital, with no original buildings still standing.
