The Carrickmacross Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £5,977. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Carrickmacross Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ballymackney, Bocks, Carrickmacross, Corracharra, Crossalare, Donaghmoyne, Drumboorg, Drumcarrow, Drumgurra, Enagh, Kilmurry, Kiltybegs, Loughfea and Referagh.
The Carrickmacross Workhouse was close in 1921. A number of the original buildings were destroyed during World War II as a precautionary measure.
There is local interest in restoring the remaining buildings of the Carrickmacross Workhouse.
