My Grandfather was born here in 1880 William Fleming also his sister Cathrine to my grandmother Mary Anne Fleming.
The Castlederg Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £2,584. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 200 inmates. The Castlederg Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Bomackatall, Castlederg, Castle Gore, Clare, Corgary, Dooish, West Drumquin, Killen, Killeter, Lisnacloon, Listymore, Magheracreggan, Tully, and Tullycar.
The Castlederg Workhouse was closed in 1928 and the buildings were demolished in the 1930's. The site was later occupied by the Derg Valley Hospital which has since closed.

My ggreat grandmother Mary Patten,died at Castlederg Workhouse in 1884. Her two sons and four grandchildren had emigrated to Vermont USA by 1860. They all lived at that time on a lane near Spamount on the McCaskie farm. It appears a daughter stayed behind with Mary, who subsequently died, leaving Mary on her own. There was probably very poor communication due to literacy problems with the Vermont family. However, there were several families from the Castlederg area living in that community which usually helped with trans Atlantic news from home. A Patton plot in Carncorn Churchyard at their home parish likely marks their burial place.
