There is a lot of interesting history surrounding the castle in Drimoleague. Built from approx 1540 onwards the castle was sacked by Cromwells General Ireton  in 1649. Extensive damage was done to the structure  and it was never inhabited after that. In 2000AD at the O Donovan Clan Gathering a commitment was made by Minister Síle DeValera to commence the repair of the castle. The works lasted some twelve years and the result is a credit to the commitment of the Department of Public Works to preserve this vital piece of history.
