  • Beautiful image - thank you!

Where would I look to obtain information regarding the school adminssions there - 1870 to 1880?

  • Would this have been an "Industrial School"?

On his attention papers for the Irish Guards my grandfather James Joseph Melican of Abbeyside it records that he was educated at "Industrial School under Home Office or Local Government Board but gives no address.  He was born in Abbeyside on June 18th 1884, the illegitimate son of Bridget Hyde and John Melican (Dairyman of Kilmacthomas).

James Joseph was certainly at home in Abbeyside for 1901 census and listed at 16 years old as a Scholar. After Industrial School, he attended the Royal Hibernian Military School and then the Duke of York's Royal Military School. Both of these are recorded on his attestation (no dates). RHMS was in Dublin  I guess he was home on school vacation for the Census?

Any help or local information relating to this most gratefully received.

    Best wishes, Nigel Melican
