Clancy’s House & Shop

The Clancy family resided behind the church at Knockjames within the townland of Derryulk Middle.  This family lived there for many years.  Honora Clancy resided there in the 1901 Census with her son, Michael.  Both were listed as farmers.  Honora was aged 51 and a widow.  Her husband, Patrick had died before 1900.   In the 1901 Census this holding consisted of a house, a cow house, a stable, a coach house and a dairy.  The house was listed as a 2nd class house with a thatched roof containing 3 rooms and 3 windows at its front.  Honora Clancy was listed as the occupier and the leaseholder of this home.  She was also listed as the leaseholder of the Knockjames RC Church property. In the 1911 Census,  Honora’s property contained a cow house, piggery, dairy, and fowl house.  As the coach house was not listed in 1911, this may have become the grocery shop.    Hanora sold salt, sugar, flour and basic supplies for the neighbours in the locality.  It is not known why she opened the shop, but it can be assumed that there was a need for same.  At that time, the trip to Tulla was a journey of at least 4 miles and for many families in the area,  it may have been difficult to make. A local resident recalled Honora starting the fire in the hearth  with sugar that she sold in the shop.  The shop was open after Mass at Knockjames on Sunday mornings for many years.  It was a gathering place for the neighbours to meet and collect their supplies.

Honora ran this shop until her death at aged 86 on 25 June 1934.   Her daughter, Mary was present at her death and registered same.  Mary Clancy died in Raheen Hospital in 1938 of cancer.  It was about this time that the shop also closed.

Michael Clancy continued to reside at the house until his death on 24 October 1942.  He is buried with his sister and his parents in Tulla Graveyard.
