  • Hello Pettigrews! I was so excited to see the many relatives of mine posting here. I have been on a mission to connect the dots to our shared ancestors James Pettigrew and Martha Moore. I have read every family history available online and I just can't find my missing piece(s).

According to the history my family has, we descend from an Elizabeth Alexander (Pettigrew) born 1817 in South Carolina. She and her husband John had a daughter Caroline b. 1832 in Abbeville S.C. Who is my 3rd G Grandmother, Elizabeth would be my 4th. Unfortunately I have not been able to confirm who Elizabeth's parents were. Not an official record to be found. The 1850 census shows all 3 of them together in Mississippi and that's all I have other than word of mouth.

any assistance would be so appreciated. xo

  • Hi, Julie! James Louis Pettigrew was my 5th great grandfather. I have a lot of data on Ancestry. My user name is my married name: chufstedler, and my tree is public. His parents are James Pettigrew and Dame Gelies Moncrieff; his parents are James Pettigru and Martha Moore; and his parents are Matthew Petigru (1565-1594) and Martha Gurney. Matthew, my 8th great grandfather, was born in France and died at age 29 in Scotland. He had James, his son, in Orleans, France. There’s much more.
I am in Virginia, USA, and am from North Carolina, where there is a Pettigrew Plantation, which was owned by General James Johnston Pettigrew, who organized and led Pike’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg in our Civil War (the War Between the States, more accurately). There is also a Pettigrew State Park. Not allowed to post external links yet, sorry.

I hope this helps. If you have trouble accessing my family tree, let me know, and I will export it for you.
