Dunshaughlin Workhouse

The Dunshaughlin Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £5,850. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 400 inmates. The Dunshaughlin Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Culmullen, Donaghmore, Dunboyne, Dunshaughlin, Kilbreau, Kilcloone, Killeen, Kilmessan, Rathfeigh, Ratoath, and Skreen in Co. Meath, and Garristown in Co. Dublin.

During World War I, the Dunshaughlin Workhouse was repurposed as a holding depot for Belgian refugees. In 1921, the Workhouse was taken over by the Black & Tans who used it as a barracks.

After the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922, the Dunshaughlin Workhouse went through a number of different uses, including a school and a courthouse.

The Dunshaughlin Workhouse is currently in a state of disrepair, but the walls of many of the buildings still stand. There are currently discussions being held, on a local level, regarding what should be done with the Dunshaughlin Workhouse.

My Great Great Grandfather Michael Dorey baptised 1824 in Ratoath, Meath died on 31 Jan 1888 at the Dunshaughlin Workhouse of heart disease. His death record said he was from Norman's Grove. I have not been able to obtain information about when he was admitted there.

My 1st cousin 3x removed, Marianne Carney, was born 1872 in the workhouse. Her parents were John Carney and Margaret Walsh. I need to know the parents of John Carney who is the brother of my 2nd great-grandfather. The family left for the U.S. in 1872.
