The Athlone Franciscan Abbey is located in the civil parish of St Mary's in County Westmeath.
The Franciscan Order first established a residence in Athlone in the year 1620.
This Abbey was constructed as part of that settlement.
Since the mid 19th century, the Abbey has been allowed to fall into severe disrepair. This building is now no more than a ruin, though it is possible that it was never really finished, as documentary sources suggest that construction was halted in the 1680's due to the outbreak of war. The walls were also used by British forces as a defensive post.
The grounds have been maintained to a good standard.
