Remains of Hanging Posts

These are the remaining posts of former Hanging apparatus in a field known as The Hangman's Field.  It is located on a private property near Leap Castle. Quote from Tony Scully's book  Slieve BloomFrom Father to Son " Situated close to Leap Castle is a field which is still known as the "Hangmans Field" where executions were apparently commonplace as is evidenced by a bill presented to the Crown by a member of the Darby family for "ye hooks for hanging ye rebels" Each hook cost 1s 6d and it would appear that a lot of them were used at the time.  One of these hooks was found embedded in an oak tree which was cut down in this field at the beginning of the 20th century.
