I am planning a trip to Ireland (hopefully in the next year or so) and would love to visit this castle. I would also like to have permission from the land owner. Not sure where to start to find the person that owns this property.
Ballymacoda Ladysbridge (Cork)
Igthermurragh Castle
(Situated between Ladysbridge and Ballymacoda)
Situated in the diocese of Cloyne, the tithes amount to £651, 13. 2 ½ There is a glebe of four acres, but no glebe-house. The church is a plain ancient building and contains monuments of the Supple and Pittman families. In the R.C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or district of Ballymacoda and Ladysbridge. There is a national school in which 60 attend, and a private school in which 40 attend. Attached photo shows the remains of Ightermurragh Castle, which has been the property of the Supples or De Capells, The Earl of Shannon lived in it and is now in private ownership. Where it was situated it stood out and was admired by all.

Hello Angela,
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out.
As far as I know it is in private ownership, but I will find out for you - you can see it from the road, however, it is approx half a mile in from the road situated in lush countryside.
Here is a link regarding it:
https://www.castles.nl/ightermurragh-castle
Also he must have been very loyal and fond of his servants - back in 1885[towards the end of the Famine here in Ireland] The Earl of Shannon bought a plot and Headstone in the nearby cemetery for the Joyce family who worked for him on the Estate - see the attached link: https://historicgraves.ie/ightermurragh/co-igma-0010/grave
Back in 2013 a voluntary group of locals under the leader of John Tierney photocopied, and transcribed all Headstone Inscriptions in 6 local cemeteries in the area - Ightermurragh Cemetery included.
Will come back to you when I have more information.

I am actually a decendent of the Supples, which is why I would really like to see this castle. I have seen on other websites that it is a private ownership. I would not want to tresspass on someone else's property without permission.
Thanks for your help Phyl!

Hi Angela,
Sorry for the long delay, but eventually found the information. Also with the COVID 19, I expect your holidays have been put on hold. Yes, it is in private ownership, but nearer to when you are actually coming to visit, do let me know and I will have a word with the owner, visiting the Castle is no problem, but it is on a working farm so may not be available and also gates have to be kept closed as there are cows and cattle on the land. With all that said - did a visit last sunday and it was just beautiful down there. Its a very large Castle compared to others in the area. I was mesmerised with the fireplace - you can actually stand completely upright underneath it. The only residents presently there are Crows nesting high up and the inside has some lovely Elder Trees growing up through it. It looks like it was a 4 story in its day with lovely panaramic views all around it.
Stay safe

Hi Phyl,
I will be visiting Ireland next week and interested in any information regarding the possibility of visiting Supple Castle. As a Supple it has a personal meaning for me.
I have been able to trace my Supple ancestors back to migrating from County Cork, but not within Ireland.
Thank you for any information you can provide.

Hi Jim,
Was in town earlier today and the road from Ladysbridge to Ballymacoda where Ightermurragh is located is closed from Aug 30th until Oct 2nd due to road maintenance, which I would assume would be between the time of 9am - 6pm daily from Monday - Friday. Also can you send me your email address.

Greetings Phyl,
It appears this thread is a few years old, but I was wondering if it is still possible to get in
contact with the private land owner to see if they would allow another visit to the castle. My family is also related to the Supples, and we are planning a trip next July 2023 to visit. I would appreciate any help as this would mean the world to visit.Kind regards,

Hi All,
I too am a descendant of the Supples of Ightermurragh Castle and would love to visit the site with permission. This thread is dated, but I was excited to find it and would love to explore genealogy with others here.
