Kinnity Castle is a grand hotel, located outside the town of Birr in County Offaly. Renowned in more recent years as a popular wedding destination and weekend retreat, visitors can step back in time and relax into the plush surroundings of a real Castle that captures an air of elegance and luxury. But of course, precisely because it is steeped in history, Kinnity Castle is a magnetic draw for anyone that is interested in heritage buildings. It even hosts the odd ghost, more than qualifying its ancient beginnings.

Kinnitty Castle History

It is believed that the site has been occupied from as early as 350AD. The castle was completed in 1630, and the Gothic-Revival style building which stands today was built in the 1830's by the Pain Brothers.

The castle was badly burnt in 1922 as a result of Republican activities, but was rebuilt with government aid.

The castle also has a strong tradition of ghostly goings on and even featured in a 2004 episode of the paranormal investigation show, Most Haunted. Nowadays you can stay at Kinnitty Castle and see for yourself if you believe in the stories of things that go bump in the night.
