Leamaneh Castle is located at a crossroads between Killinaboy and Kilfenora in North County Clare.
It was built by the O'Brien's of Thomond.
This is a fine example of how castles in Ireland were repurposed as building styles evolved. On one side of the building there is a 15th century Tower House, then, built onto the Tower House is a 17th century Fortified House.
Both structures are very much typical of their time.
Leamaneh is currently in a state of disrepair as it has not been occupied for many generations.
Leamaneh is host to a famous Irish legend, that of Maura Rua who allegedly did away with a number of husbands to become one of the most feared women in the west. You can hear Ireland's great storyteller Eddie Lenihan tell the tale of Máire Rua on his podcast by clicking here.
Please note that Leamaneh Castle, though situated close to the road, is located on private land and any entry may only be done with the permission of the landowner. Instead, enjoy this video of the interior of Leamaneh Castle from the comfort of your own home
