The Mohill Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £7,980. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 700 inmates. The Mohill Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Aghavas, Annaduff, Armaghveagh, Ballinamore, Carrigallen, Cloone, Drumreilly, Eslin, Fenagh, Mohill, Newtown Gore, Oughterargh, and Rinn.

The Mohill Workhouse has since been completely demolished and the site is now occupied by housing with no original features surviving.
