The Newcastle Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1838. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £7,600. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 550 inmates. The Newcastle Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Abbeyfeale, Ardagh, Ballingarry, Castletown, Clonneagh, Drumcallagher, Killagholehane, Killeady, Kilmeedy, Mahoonagh, Monagay, Newcastle, and Rathronan.
The Newcastle Workhouse was altered in the 1940's to accomodate a further 360 inmates.
The Newcastle Workhouse site is now occupied by St Ita's Hospital.
