The Newtown Limavady Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1842 at a cost of £7,291. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Newtown Limavady Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Aghanloo, Ballykelly, Bellanrena, Benone, Drum, Dungiven, Faughanvale, Feeny, Fore Glen, Fruit Hill, Gelvin, Glenshane, The Highlands, Keady, Lislane, Myroe, Newtown Limavady, Owenreagh, and Straw.
The Newtown Limavady Workhouse was closed in 1930 and the site was repurposed as a medical centre. Today the Newtown Limavady Workhouse site is occupied by a Communtiy Developement Iniative with a number of the original buildings still standing.
