An Seanbhaile aka Old Town is a small village in the townland of Cloonfad (located on the R357 road between Ballinasloe, Co. Galway and Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly. Old Town, as recorded in the first Ordnance Survey map of 1837, comprised a much larger village in the 19th-century. Two significant ringforts stand nearby.
By the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1857, some of the older buildings were down and Old Town was inhabited by the following families (L to R):
- Martin Connor [GV#2Da] on the boreen leading up to Turley's [GV#4a] herd's house;
- John Coughlan [GV#4a]; the garden just beneath "Old" was held by John Green, the buildings no longer inhabitable.
- Patrick Healy [GV#5a].
- John Kelly [GV#8Aa] opposite Healy's, by the boreen;
- vacant [GV#8Ab]
- John Green [GV#2Ea] the larger house at the end AND [GV#2a] further right (out of frame)
- James Coughlan [GV#7Aa] further left (out of frame).
By the time of the 1901 Census, Cloonfad national School had been constructed further eastwards. And the Connors and Coughlans had gone. Old Town's residents were by then (L to R):
- Bridget Greens [house #21]
- Patrick Healy Jr. (1859-1926) & Honora Loughnane [house #20 aka GV9a].
- Thomas Loughnans [house #19]
- Michael Kelly [house #18] opposite Healy's, by the boreen;
- Patrick Kilduff [house #17] formerly Coughlan's
- James Greens [house #16] the larger house at the end
- National School [house #15]
The church for the area is known as Clonfad Church, in the Parish of Moore. The village post office, which had been operated by the Kenny family [GV#18a] for many generations, closed in January 2008.
