Smithhill (a translation of at Ardnagowna – the height of the smith) was part of the demesne of The Palace at Elphin.

In the early 18th century, Smith-hill was the residence of the maternal grandfather of Oliver Goldsmith – the Reverend Oliver Jones. Either Goldsmith or his father was born here. See Robert Jones Lloyd's account here

William Lloyd of Ardnagowan (Smith Hill) Co. Roscommon, Barrister, (born 29/9/1725 died 4/10/1798) live here in the 18th century and was succeeded by his son Robert Jones Lloyd Esq. in the late 18th and early 19th century.

In 1837, it was inherited by Robert's eldest son, the Reverend John Lloyd who was assassinated in 1847.

At the time of Griffith's Valuation in 1858, the house was unoccupied when it was valued at £8 and held by Robert Lynch.
