Roscrea is located in Ireland's Mid-West Region in a valley between Devil's Bit mountain to the south west and the Slieve Bloom mountains to the north east. It is 71 km (44 mi) from Limerick City in the west and 122 km (76 mi) from Dublin City in the east. It is at the crossroads of the R445 regional road and the N62 between Athlone and Horse and Jockey.

Historically, Roscrea was noted as being on one of the ancient highways of Ireland known as the 'Slighe Dala' (meaning parliament way) which stretched from Tara in the east to the city and port of Limerick and the port of Tarbert. It is possible the route formed much of the old N7 route now the R445 which originally passed through the town.

  • Are there parish records for St Cronans and how or who do I contact to verify an ancester Denis Short born c 1820 is from this parish?  Denis Short, wife Mary Doran Short and their family immigrated to America, New York in 1852.  Their sons Martin, Thomas and Dennis Jr were born in Tipperary County.  Denis and Mary, I believe, were married in St. Cronans by a Fr. Thomas Blake.  Thank you!

    The address " Whitepark " . . . would . . in those years . . be a district approx. 1 mile  from town centre . .  farm country.

    The above records . . are the transscript . . of the original ledgers of St.Cronans . . .

I made local inquiries as to the Surnames . . . and the name SHORT is NOT now . . common to Roscrea . . . Doran's are still here . . .

  • Thank you so much Eamonn!  This information is very helpful.  The only confusing part that I need to figure out is Denis's birth year.  Your information has him born 1812 but US census records has him c 1820.  I thank you again for taking the time to help me.  It is much appreciated!
