St. Colman's Church, Tierneevin
St. Colman's Church, Tierneevin

The church was built in 1856 by Fr. T. Shannon P.P., Gort. The windows are unusual in being cut in a different style, each representing a period of Gothic architecture. A belfry was added in 1925.

Hurricane Debbie caused major damage to the church on 16th September 1961. During reconstruction the pitch of the roof was lowered. A new porch including a baptistry was added. George Campbell was the artist for the glass etching over the main door and also for the stained glass window, The Sower.George Walsh was the artist for the Holy Family and Kilmacduagh windows.

  • My great grandfather, Thomas Price, was born and baptized in Kilmacduagh in 1859. Would I be safe in assuming that his baptism would have taken place in this church?

I recently reached out to the parish of Gort where they affirmed that he was indeed baptized there, but when I asked if the church that he was baptized in still existed they responded by saying, "...the Church in Tierneevin/Kilmacduagh wasn't built then to my knowledge."

Given that information I would assume that this would be the church and according to this chronicle it was indeed erected prior to his baptism.

I am hoping for a visit sometime next year with my siblings and our spouses and will surely visit here just to know that he and his family had worshipped there.

    Many thanks,

    Barbara

  • Dear Barbara,

In 1856 the parish priest, Fr. Timothy Shannon laid the foundation of the Tierneevin Church. This church replaced an older Mass Chapel/Mass House.

August 1857 Michael Price , son of Michael Price and Mary Grealish, was baptised.

    October 1859 Thomas was baptised.

    July 1861   John was baptised.

September 1856 Michael and Mary were married.

I'm sorry I don't have the exact date of each month.

I lived in the town of Gort until August of last year . Our Convent was closed and we moved to Galway city.  I may have corresponded with you a few years ago.

Enjoy your trip to "the old country" next year.

    God bless you,

    De Lourdes Fahy (Sr.)

  • Hello! It is so good to hear from you. Yes, we were in contact and my husband and I met with you briefly at the convent in June 2019.

My 3rd cousin, Gregory Price, was also in touch with you and he told me that the convent was closing. I am sure it was difficult to leave your lovely home and town, but hope you are happy in Galway.

Now to my query. I contacted the Gort Parish by messenger on FaceBook. What I was trying to find out is if the church in Gort, St. Colman’s, was erected in time for Thomas’ baptism. She responded by saying “…he was baptized in Gort I would say... the Church in Tierneevin/Kilmacduagh wasn’t built then to my knowledge.”

So, I explored a bit and found the church in Tierneevin and it led me to that post on IrelandXO.

So then, what do you think? Can we assume that Thomas was baptized there? I would love to visit the site with my family and say that this is the place where Thomas was baptized and his family worshipped.

Again, so glad to hear from you!

    Best wishes,

    Barbara
