The Urlingford Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1850. The Workhouse was opened in 1853 at a cost of £6,500. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 500 inmates. The Urlingford Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Balleen, Ballyconra, Baunmore, Clonmantagh, Galmoy, Glashare, Johnstown, Lisdowney, Rathbeagh, Tubbridbritain, and Urlingford in Co. Kilkenny, and Buolick, Fennor, Kilcooly, New Birmingham, and Poyntstown in Co. Tipperary.

The Urlingford Workhouse buildings were completely demolished and the site is now occupied by housing.
