A snapshot of local history from the Cholera Epidemic in Ireland (1832-33).

A very extraordinary case of cholera, and a still more extraordinary cure, have lately occurred in the county of Donegal. A Mrs Gorrell, a Protestant, got suddenly ill and became greatly alarmed for the safety of body and soul, crying out that "she had got the cholera morbus and wanted the priest".

The Catholic clergyman of course attended – the patient read her incantation –  was duly received into the Catholic church – received the sacraments according to its rights – recovered from the cholera! and is now in good health, and a staunch Catholic.
