Back to List

On the 14th of December 1918, Countess Constance Markieviecz became the first woman ever to be elected to the Parliament of England.

She was a member of Sinn Féin which that year won 73 of the 105 MP seat set aside for Irish representatives.

Comments

  • In 1918 Sinn Féin candidates pledged to take seats in Dáil Eireann, not Westminster. Her mandate was to represent the Irish people in an Irish parliament. Is the author guilty of revisionism or is it just a case of lazy writing and poor research?
