Erskine Childers was elected as the fourth President of Ireland on the 25th of June 1973. 

The position became vacant after DeValera retired at the age of 90. 

Childers' time as President was cut short when he suffered a heart attack and died on the 17th of November 1974. 

He was attending a conference at the Royal College of Physicians at the time.
