The groundbreaking radio programme ‘Women Today’ began broadcasting on 31 May 1979. It set out to give Irish women a voice and unashamedly addressed women’s issues, with live callers on air for the first time.

The radio current affairs programme Women Today show was proposed by Clare Duignan to redress the inadequate representation of women in RTÉ broadcasting.

Dealing with women’s issues, the show was initially presented by Marian Finucane, produced by Clare Duignan, with Doireann Ní Bhriain as a long-running reporter.

Immediately popular with listeners, the show gave many housewives sought an outlet for their troubles and stayed in a prime slot until it ended in 1985.
