Back to List

On the 15th of June 1919, John Alcock and Arthur Whitten-Brown
made world history by completing the first non-stop transatlantic flight.

After a record 16 hour flight from Canada, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown landed their plane at Derrigimlagh Bog near Clifden, Co. Galway, Ireland; only 16 years after the first powered flight. Today, Alcock and Brown's achievement is commemorated by an unusual egg-like memorial, surrounded by grassy hills, sweeping views and plenty of sheep.
