Since it's humble beginnings in 1954, the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival has gone from strength the strength to become one of the most prominent seafood festivals in the world. This is down to the winning combination of high quality seafood provided by the city's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, and the craic and hospitality for which Galway is famous. The festival features street vendors, traditional hooker boats, dance, and, of course, oysters. The festival takes place every year in September and has become a fixture amongst the many festivals of the Galway calendar.
