Gladstone's Irish Church Act comes into effect

On the 1st of January, 1871, Gladstone's Irish Church Act came into effect. 

The Act, which was written in 1869, removed the right of the Church of Ireland to collect tithes from the Irish people.

This was an incredibly important step in the process of dismantling the Protestant Ascendency.
