In 1805, Francis Beaufort from Navan, County Meath created the Beaufort Scale, a method used to relate wind speeds to conditions both on dry land and at sea.
It is used extesively on ships and in navigation.
The scale has been modified over the years but it is still based on Beaufort's original design.
