King John gave the Anglo-Norman lord Thomas FitzAnthony control over counties Waterford and Desmond (now most of modern-day Cork and Kerry). FitzAnthony established a lordship in the south of County Waterford, and Stradbally became its centre. During this period, FitzAnthony also founded Thomastown in Kilkenny.
