LEWISBURGH, or LOUISBOURG, an ecclesiastical district, in the parish of KILGAVOWER, barony of MURRISK, county of MAYO, and province of CONNAUGHT, 11 miles (W. S. W.) from Westport: the population is returned with the parish.
This place is pleasantly situated on the southern shore of Clew Bay, on the western coast.
The village is neatly built; a market for provisions is held on Monday, and there are fairs on the 24th of June, Aug. 4th, and Sept. 29th; a constabulary police force is also stationed here.
The living is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Tuam, and in the patronage of the Incumbent of Aughaval: the stipend is £75, paid by the incumbent, and the curate has also a glebe-house and a glebe comprising 22 acres. The church of the district, a neat edifice, was erected by a gift of £415. 7., and a loan of £46. 3. from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1828.
In the R. C. divisions, this place constitutes a separate union or district; the chapel is a good slated building.
