On the 2nd of February 1992, Mary Robinson, the 7th President of the Irish Republic, visited the city of Belfast. 

She was the first Irish President to do so. 

On the visit she met with both Catholic and Protestant sides of the struggle, even shaking hands with Gerry Adams against the advice of the Irish government.
