Pierce Butler had been born in Knocktopher c 1813 but left Ireland in 1834 after joining the HEICA. He spent 19 years in India and a further 13 years in New Zealand after taking his discharge. He returned to Ireland in Jan 1867 and in the Oct he married Margaret Cuddihy at the catholic church in Hugginstown.
