Samuel Beckett wins Nobel Prize for Literature

On the 23rd of October 1969, Samuel Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his writing, which - in new forms of the novel and drama - in the destitution of modern man acquires its elevation"

The Dublin-born author is best known for his play, 'Waiting for Godot' and he is recognised as one of the greats amongst Irish writers.
